And the countdown begins...12/8/14

Wow! We are in the last two weeks of school before Winter Break.  We were definitely reminded today of how cold it was.  I have been working really hard to adjust the order of the math class.  There has been a few adjustments that your child is fully aware of.  We have definitely been doing more workshop.  Workshop is where I give students 3-4 work stations to go to in rotation.  Students are broken into groups of less than 6.  They work collaboratively and individually depending on the task.  This gives me an opportunity to directly instruct students in a smaller group setting.  I am so excited and your children seem to love workshop as well.

We have just finished with area and perimeter.  We are beginning multiple digit multiplication.  Please have your child practice those multiplication skills so that they can become more fluent with them.  Here is a website that we use to give practice to students.  Math Magician Site 1 or challenge them with this version of Math Magician 2.

Here is a list of activities you can do with your child to help build math fluency and to connect what we learn in math to real life:

  • Make up numbers, roll numbers with dice, or find numbers (on labels) and compare them
  • Find numbers and write them in expanded form
  • Make numbers and tell which place value (and/or value) each digit represents
  • Place large numbers in a number line
  • Draw pictures and make models of numbers
  • Practice addition and subtraction facts
This is a newsletter that will help show you math concepts that will be taught this module.  Use this as a guide to help you learn the concepts your child is responsible for learning.

Jacobs Newsletter 11/17

Hello parents and students,

In math, we are wrapping up this very short unit of Metric Unit Conversions.  Students had a quiz on this information today.  Tomorrow (Tuesday, Nov. 18), I will be giving a Benchmark Assessment.  This is not graded.  This serves as a way for me to see if students understood Modules 1-3.    Please review material with your child.  Again, this is not graded.  We will be starting a new unit on Wednesday involving Multiplication.  Please have your child review multiplication facts daily.  The more practice, the better.

Spirit Night is Nov. 25 from 5-9 pm.  Maleah and I will definitely be there.  So be there or be square!

Tonight's Homework

Good evening parents and students. I do apologize for the late post about homework.  I had issues with my daughter that I needed to take care of. Many of my students got a chance to meet my daughter this afternoon. Anyway, we have started lesson 1 of our unit. My first and second blocks received the homework packet. They are to complete lesson 1. Block 3 (Ms. Kiser homeroom) copied the problems to complete. We had copying issues. They will receive their packet tomorrow. Here is a video that will help you if there is something you do not understand.  Module 2 Lesson 1 HW Help

I want to address grades as well. They will be put up in a few minutes. If you do not see your child's grade for the math test from last week, it is because they did not have a passing grade and I would like to give them another opportunity.  They will have a conference with me about the test and then it will be sent home for a parent signature with a sticky note attached. The note states that in order to receive an alternate assignment, the test must be brought back with a signature.  If it is not brought back by interim time, the original grade received will go into the gradebook. If you have any more questions about this feel free to email me. Thank you.

Jacobs Newsletter 11/7

Happy Friday, students and parents!!! What a fantastic week.  I just want to give you a synopsis on this week in math.  We have finished up with Module 1 which is Place Value, Rounding, and Algorithms for Addition & Subtraction. The last few lessons in Module 1 were a little rocky.  I am going to pull students for small group to make sure the concepts are understood.  As of today, everyone has taken the addition and subtraction test.  I will be pulling students to view their test grade and give alternate assignments for the grade for them to complete.  It may only be completed in class.

Math packets will continue to be sent home for completion grades.  The answer key will be posted the next day for students to check their answer.  Please remind students of the importance of responsibility.

Problem of the Month:
We will be working on Problems of the Month.  We will go over a concept of the problem as a whole class and then students will have two weeks to solve and develop elaborate explanations as to how to solve the word problem.  This will never go home for completion.  This is strictly an in class assignment.

Upcoming in Math:
We will start a new Module on Monday.  A parent letter informing you of the concepts taught in this module was sent home today in family folders.  We will be focused on Metric Unit Conversions.  Students will continue to practice with tape diagrams when solving word problems involving measurement.

Field Day was a blast.  Congrats to Ms. Kiser's homeroom for the grade level win!  The teachers had fun partaking in Tug of War with our students. Pictures are coming soon.
